‘The Avengers’ Makes P281-M in 5 Days, Biggest Opening Ever in PHL Box-Office History!

It’s the superhero team up of a lifetime. Now, it’s shaping up to be the highest-grossing film – for all time!

“Marvel’s The Avengers” rewrote Philippine box-office record books when it grossed a monumental P281-million opening weekend gross nationwide – the biggest debut ever in history, this was revealed by Victor R. Cabrera, managing director of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Philippines.

“It’s practically a box office tsunami that has so far drowned, wiped out and rewritten every local record in its first five days of play,” adds Cabrera.

Foremost of the records to fall is the highest opening weekend, previously set by “Spider-Man 3” at P236-million (a benchmark set in 6 days back in 2007).

Since it opened last Wednesday, April 25, “Marvel’s The Avengers” has surpassed daily records in its path set by various blockbusters:

Biggest Wednesday Ever: P56.6-M, beating “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’s” P55.4-M.

Biggest Thursday Ever: P44.1M, smashing “Spider-man 3’s P28.4-M

Biggest Friday Ever: P45.3-M, outgrossing “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1’s” P44.1-M.

Biggest Saturday Ever: P66.4-M, breaking “Transformers: Dark of the Moon’s” P60.8-M.

Biggest Sunday Ever: P68.5M, outlasting “Transformers: Dark of the Moon’s” P60.8M. Sunday’s receipts for “The Avengers” also now holds the distinction of the all-time biggest single-day gross in the country.

Other milestones achieved were fastest time to cross the P100-million mark (in only two days) and P200-million (four days).

With another non-working holiday looming tomorrow, May 1, box office sales for “The Avengers” may be set for more records.

Playing in almost 500 screens, “The Avengers” posted the biggest sales in SM North EDSA (P17.85-M), SM Mall of Asia (P15.02-M), SM Megamall (P12.51-M), Trinoma (P10.27-M), SM Cebu (P9.53-M), Glorietta 4 (P7.60-M), SM Southmall (P6.76-M), Newport City (P6.64-M) and SM Fairview (P6.63-M).

Rounding out the Top 20 cinemas are Gateway (P6.06-M), Eastwood (P5.58-M), Power Plant (P5.49-M), Greenbelt 3 (P5.13-M), Festival Mall (P5.08-M), Robinsons Ermita (P4.77-M), Robinsons Galleria (P4.73-M), Alabang Town Center (P4.63-M), Market! Market! (P4.50-M), Shang Cineplex (P4.30-M) and Ayala Cinemas Cebu (P4.27-M).

Overseas, the superhero film also bowed in 38 other territories and has brought in a whopping $178.4 million since opening April 25. It opened at No.1 in every single one of those territories while setting opening weekend records in many South and Central American countries. Some of the individual numbers include $24.7 million from the UK, $19.7 million from Australia, $15.9 million from Mexico and $12.9 million from Korea.

In Discovering ‘Prometheus’, Seekers Land Inhospitable Terrain!

Ridley Scott’s upcoming sci-fi action movie Prometheus 3D brings explorers and scientists to an inhospitable, barren environment. With a strange and vast alien structure, Scott assures the audience that it looks like nothing that has been seen before in science fiction.

“What if you could meet God but God turned out to be the Devil?” So asks Prometheus Executive Producer Michael Ellenberg of the themes at the heart of Ridley Scott’s first return to science fiction since his seminal work on “Alien” and “Blade Runner.”

At the core of Scott’s story are the eternal questions of human existence: Who are we and where do we come from? As Michael Fassbender who plays the android David in the movie summarises: “It’s basically about trying to find out if there was intervention in the birth of civilisation on planet Earth by other beings, which we come to know as Engineers, and whether they had a master plan in mind for us.

For director Ridley Scott, the themes of Prometheus are a reaction to an abundance of post-apocalyptic cinema. Prometheus isn’t necessarily about looking forward, at what we might become, but it’s about looking back, at where we might have come from.

Shot in Iceland, “Prometheus” production designer Arthur Max reveals that Morocco was the first choice of location for the movie. “We were planning to shoot in Morocco,” shares Max. “But with all the geopolitical turmoil in North Africa, we weren’t able to do so. So we had to rethink.” The change means a very different aesthetic to the look of the planet – Morocco’s deserts have been replaced by the cold, icy rock of the Iceland location.

In addition to shooting on location in Iceland, the production took over the 007-Stage at Pinewood Studios, just outside London. At 374ft long, it is the largest soundstage in Europe and boasts more than 59,000 sq ft of usable space. For Prometheus, it wasn’t big enough by half.

The production started on the backlot behind the stage, constructing the Prometheus’s cargo bay and a small replica of the planet surface. This spilled onto an extension built to house more of an alien pyramid mound interior set, before finally connecting, and filling, the main space inside 007-Stage.

In the end, the production added 150ft to the stage’s length. “I knew, looking from end to end, it was never going to be big enough for this set,” says Scott. “I hate working with green screen. I like the actors to have their proscenium and see what they’re doing; see the arena they’re in. It’s partly that. To do that blue screen thing and say, ‘the monster’s coming down the corridor!’ It’s really boring.”

“The scale meant we could do a nice, big exploration scene in there,” explains Max. “We’ve got a 250ft network of tunnelling in there, 150ft of chambers and 25ft high doors.”

For Michael Fassbender, Scott’s attention to detail in the set design of the planet surface was second to none. “Have you gone into 007-Stage yet?” he exclaims with disbelief. “You have to see the space colon, as I call it!”

The practicality of the set makes his job easier as an actor, he explains. “What’s great is Ridley will do something on a piece of fishing line if it works, and stick a bit of green screen up in the corner. He knows technology but what’s great about him is he’s very primal. Even the technology in the film, you’re like, ‘That’s totally feasible.’”

Arthur Max says he and Ridley Scott have learnt, over many years of working together on films like GLADIATOR, KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, and BLACK HAWK DOWN, that sometimes it’s better to achieve something practically than with CGI. “I think balance is the key in how much you build,” he says. “You have to get a convincing base, and when you speak to the visual effects department, they’ll tell you that they want enough reference material to work from. It’s especially tough on this, because almost every shot has a visual component and everything has to be constructed from scratch. You can’t go to a back lot and you can’t go to a prop house.”

The centerpiece of the alien set at Pinewood was a 32ft tall monolithic head, which can be glimpsed in posters for the film. This was built practically by Arthur Max’s team. “The idea there is that it’s part of the culture of the Engineers,” says Max of the race of aliens at the heart of the story. “This race of interplanetary visitors who have given us upgrades – mentally and physically – over the millennium.”

Max summarizes the key challenge of envisioning the alien environment: “The people who inhabit this planet, called the Engineers, and their technology, is beyond anything we’re able to know or understand, but it has to be visually interesting. That’s, I think, the hardest challenge, too, because we have to compete with the most iconic science fiction creature ever. Trying to come up with something that’s going to rival that is the real trick.”

“Prometheus 3D” lands very soon on June 7 in theaters nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Animation Directors, Tapped to Make ’21 Jump Street’!

Columbia Pictures wanted a fresh take for its new action-comedy 21 Jump Street, so an intense search was held for a director that could make the new vision pop on the screen. They got two for the price of one: Phil Lord & Christopher Miller, who had previously helmed the acclaimed animated hit “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.”

Could the directors of a family friendly animated film possibly be the right choice for this R-rated live-action action-comedy? “We felt like we wanted to do something that was the exact opposite of what we had just done – although, to be fair, `Cloudy’ is an action comedy, just geared to a different audience. Still, we had a lot to prove,” Miller explains. “So we made a whole presentation that showed what we would do. We knew we had to do a little razzle-dazzle.”

Whatever skepticism the producers may have had was washed away by the meeting. “When they came in, they were incredibly prepared,” says producer Tania Landau. “They had a PowerPoint presentation. They had created a book with every point of the movie and how it should look. I was blown away. The guys were so creative and enthusiastic – we were all in sync.”

One of the reasons that Lord and Miller were so excited by the material was that they wouldn’t just be directing the movie – they would be living out the themes of the story. “When I was growing up, I watched ‘Jump Street’ because the cute girls in my high school were watching it – I wanted to be up on the storylines. So, this project is like coming full circle – I become a cool person by making this movie,” says Lord.

In “21 Jump Street,” Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) were enemies in high school who became unlikely friends in Police Academy. While they may not be the best cops on the beat, they have a chance to turn it around when they join the police department’s secret Jump Street unit, run by Captain Dickson (Ice Cube). They trade in their guns and badges for backpacks and use their youthful appearances to go undercover.

With Hill’s comic sense under Lord and Miller’s direction, combined with producer Neal H. Moritz’ action chops, the project had the perfect mix of talent. “You have Neal Moritz’s `Fast and Furious’ action side, and Jonah Hill style comedy,” says Miller. “Those things combine, explode, and recombine their atoms to make the perfectly formed movie.”

“Neal has produced lots of great and successful action movies,” says Hill. “So I felt that he would be a great partner in making this because I have made a lot of comedies and he has made a lot of action movies and together we could hopefully make a great action comedy.”

“Every time I do an action movie, I feel like we have to top the last one,” says Moritz. “But it’s not about bigger explosions or bigger car crashes – that doesn’t work. The action has to be character-based, it has to be something you haven’t seen before. For `21 Jump Street,’ because it’s an action comedy, we tried to have the action be clever and humorous, to really come out of the characters and their relationships.”

Opening across the Philippines in May, “21 Jump Street” will be distributed in the Philippines by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. Kuya Kim Reminisces His Top 4 Adventures in ‘Matanglawin’!

As his multi-awarded educational program “Matanglawin” celebrates its 4th anniversary, Kuya Kim recounts his top 4 unforgettable adventures done in the show that truly proved how fearless he is as a host.

One of the memorable experiences of the Trivia King is when he swam in Pasig River just so the public will be aware of the volume of garbage there. Kuya Kim reminisced the dirt and filth he went through and revealed that he actually got sick after taping the said episode.

He also narrated the time when he had a stroke and the operation of his heart was exclusively aired in “Matanglawin.” For him, it was the most meaningful episode of the show because he served as an inspiration to people who also went through or is going through the same heart condition.

Meanwhile, the show’s feature on the lives of the septic tank cleaners is proof that “Matanglawin” goes to the extreme to impart knowledge to the viewers. Kuya Kim endured the unbearable stench just to experience this ‘dirty’ job.

Lastly, he recalled the most painful experience he had was when he was bitten by a “bayawak.” Despite being used to animals, Kuya Kim was unable to escape its naturally vicious nature.

He may be saluted by many for his boldness to do such tasks, but the Trivia King reminded viewers, especially children, not to imitate what he’s been doing.

Filipinos will surely see more of Kuya Kim in “Matanglawin,” but when asked what the public should expect from the show, he simply said, “I really don’t know what can possibly happen because the search for knowledge is limitless. I am just happy that we were given this chance to educate our viewers.”

“Matanglawin” is part of ABS-CBN “Bida Best Kid” campaign launched recently that aims to empower children by encouraging them to become who they want to be and the best that they can be. It doesn’t only entertain and educate its young viewers with its values-oriented, child-friendly programs, but supports their dreams and aspirations as well.

Don’t miss the second-part of “Matanglawin’s” 4th anniversary special shot in Bangkok this Sunday (Apr 29), 9:30 AM on ABS-CBN.
