Lolong was captured in Bunawan in 2011. The reptile measured at 6.2 meters (20 feet and 4 inches) by Australian zoologist Adam Britton.
Guinness World Records proclaimed Lolong as the largest saltwater crocodile in captivity.
It was captured by professional hunters after a 3-week hunt due to a spate of attacks that killed two residents and several animals.
Authorities will try to determine what caused the death of Lolong, which had become a star attraction of the marshy town of Bunawan with 37,000 people about 830km southeast of Manila.

Experts estimate that the crocodile was more than 50 years old.
