Jessy Mendiola on playing Maria Mercedes: “I still can’t believe that I will actually become the Pinay version of this character!”

Fame didn’t even cross the mind of then 14-year-old Jessy Mendiola when she joined Star Magic’s workshop back in 2007 together with her older sister.

But it seems it was her destiny to become Philippine television’s next big star because out of the many aspiring, young talents in her batch, she was the only one who caught the eye of star maker Mr. Johnny Manahan.

jessy mendiola

“I can still remember Mr. M asking me ‘Gusto mo bang mag-artista?’ The clueless me back then answered, ‘Is it okay if pag-isipan ko po muna? Can you give me three days?’” Jessy recounted.

She did think about it for three days and after discussing the matter with her mom and siblings, Jessy signed up with Star Magic, the country’s most prestigious artist management arm. But she did not say “yes” to Mr. M’s offer because she wanted to be an actress, but rather because she felt the need to be the family’s breadwinner.

“Life wasn’t easy for us especially before I entered showbiz. I grew up without a dad and it’s only my mom who’s working to support our needs. I’ve experienced very tough times. I have experienced not having much. I even experienced eating instant noodles for dinner for many days,” she shared.

Jessy was born in Dubai to a British-Lebanese dad and a Filipina mom. She moved to the Philippines when her mom decided to start anew here. Jessy lived a life apart from her dad and grew up seeing her mom as both a mom and a dad to her and her two siblings.

“My mom has been working hard all her life. That’s why it was very easy for me to take a stand and unburden her of the responsibility of providing for our family,” she explained.

From being a simple high school student, Jessy’s life turned 360-degrees when she entered show business and began acting on television. Like any other rising star, she went through a series of workshops and did minor roles on various ABS-CBN programs. She waited long hours on the set, with only minimal speaking lines. Slowly, the reluctant star began to embrace her newfound passion, acting.

“I have learned to love the craft and it motivated me to do better. I am working not only to provide for my family, but because I have actually started to enjoy acting. I realized that I really want to become a good actress,” Jessy revealed.

She waited patiently for her career to blossom until she finally got her big break. In 2010, she was launched in her first title role as “Sabel,” a show that marked the beginning of her reign as ABS-CBN’s next teleserye princess. Her popularity and premium as an actress were bolstered after she did the television series “Budoy” and afternoon soap “Precious Hearts Romances Presents Paraiso” and starred in her first movie “The Reunion.”

Now tagged as one of Philippine television’s prettiest faces, Jessy has become one of the country’s fast-rising cover girls after being featured on the covers of top glossy magazines such as Metro, Chalk, Men’s Health, Meg and Preview. She has also proven to be a sought-after product endorser after brands Head and Shoulders, Myra E, Boardwalk, Bench and McDonalds tapped her to be their image model.

Bigger things await Jessy this year as she is set to reprise the role of Maria Mercedes played by Mexican superstar Thalia back in the 90s.

“This is really one of my dream roles. I grew up watching Maria Mercedes and I still can’t believe that I will actually become the Pinay version of this character loved by many Filipinos,” she said.

Just recently, Star Cinema also announced that Jessy is set to do a movie with John Lloyd Cruz, Richard Gomez, and Dawn Zulueta.

“MMK” features the unique “journey” of ‘batang langoy’ this Saturday!

Maalaala Mo Kaya” will present again this Saturday (June 29) the inspiring story of 11-year-old Rizza Abaño (played by Abby Bautista) and her brothers and schoolmates in Isla Mababoy in Masbate who were all so motivated to study even if they had to swim in an open sea just to get to school.

Batang Langoy

Almost a year after ABS-CBN shared the unique “journey” of the kids, who are now popularly known as “batang langoy,” many people and organizations–including ABS-CBN–were touched and eventually inspired to help out.

Even before the show premiered the ‘batang langoy’ story, “MMK” had been actively coordinating with ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya News and Current Affairs to extend assistance to the students in Isla Mababoy. The objective of “MMK” to build a nearby concrete and permanent school for the kids became an easy task through the united efforts of various groups in ABS-CBN including Lingkod Kapamilya, Sagip Kapamilya, and Pinoy Big Brother, all of which made efforts to raise funds for the project. A lot of other donors gave donations for the “dream school” until the total fund reached P1.2 million.

With enough help from everyone including the engineering department of the Philippine Army who constructed the additional classrooms, Mababoy Elementary School was finally built last March, in time for the opening of school year 2013-2014. Aside from the new school building, good-hearted donors provided the students with armchairs, books and school supplies.

The “batang langoy” episode also features Arjo Atayde, Lito Pimentel, Ana Capri, Makisig Morales, BJ Forbes, and Crispin Pineda. It was researched by Mae Rose Balanay, written by Mark Angos, and directed by Rechie Del Carmen.

Don’t miss another inspiring TV masterpiece this Saturday in the longest running drama anthology of Asia, “Maalaala Mo Kaya” (MMK), after “Wansapanataym” on ABS-CBN. For more updates, log on to www.mmk.abs-cbn.com, follow MMKOfficial on Twitter, and “like” www.facebook.com/MMKOfficial.

Breach in the floor of the Pacific Ocean unleashes a cataclysmic threat to the human race in “Pacific Rim”!

The depths of the ocean have always held a fascination for people, but we have always assumed that its wonders—and its dangers—are of our own world.

Pacific rim

That intriguing premise gave rise to Warner Bros. Pictures & Legendary Pictures’ new action adventure “Pacific Rim.” As the film begins, a breach in the floor of the Pacific Ocean unleashes a cataclysmic threat to the human race.

Director Guillermo del Toro, who also co-wrote and served as a producer on the film, relates, “Through that portal come creatures that are larger and more ferocious and brutal than anything we have ever seen: the Kaiju. In order to grapple with them, mankind pulls together all its resources and invents the largest, most dynamic and most versatile weapon ever devised. They create the Jaeger Program—towering 25-story-high robots, each operated by two pilots whose minds are neurally linked together.”

He continues, “It was a project that encompassed every single thing on my wish list, visually, atmospherically and emotionally…an unstoppable, thrilling adventure about monsters and robots, the likes of which we’ve never seen.”

Producer Thomas Tull offers, “Just that description, ‘giant monsters versus giant robots,’ gives you a sense of the scope and scale, not to mention the action and fun. And there is also an element of mystery in that we don’t know why the Kaiju are attacking. What do they want and how is humanity going to react? How can we possibly defend ourselves against them?”

The story originated with screenwriter Travis Beacham, who was on the actual Pacific Rim—on the coast of California—when the central elements of the film began to take shape. He recounts, “I remember walking along the beach in Santa Monica. It was a particularly foggy morning and there was something about the shape of the pier in the fog jutting out into the water… An image just kind of popped into my head of a behemoth, a monster, rising from the surf to meet this giant robot waiting on the shore to do battle.

“However,” Beacham acknowledges, “I knew that by itself was not a story. What really crystallized the plot for me was figuring out who is driving the robot, and finally determining it had to be two pilots—two people whose minds would have to be intimately connected to control this massive thing. That’s when the pieces started to fall into place in a very organic way.”

After collaborating with producers Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni as a screenwriter on “Clash of the Titans,” Beacham told them about his original idea for a winner-take-all war that joins man and machine against aliens, who don’t invade from beyond our galaxy, but rather ascend from the deep.

“I was hooked from the first moment Travis pitched it to us,” Tull recalls. “The film is about humanity being up against something unexpected and utterly overwhelming, and how they have to come together to combat it. We also thought the notion that we could be invaded from within was a very cool concept.”

“You can’t really run from it because they are coming from a place that’s inescapably on Earth,” Beacham adds. “Part of the allure of the ocean is that it hides its secrets so well. There are so many myths about sea monsters and giant serpents and all the other things people suppose are down there. I think there is something elementally terrifying about what can come out of this blackness.”

As del Toro began crafting the screenplay with Beacham, he became totally immersed in the world they were forming. He attests, “The more we developed the universe, the more I became personally invested in the story, the characters, the monsters, the robots, and everything it would take to make it all real. I couldn’t wait.”

“Working with Guillermo is incredible,” Beacham remarks. “He bristles with ideas and can come up with the most brilliant strokes of insight at the drop of a hat. He also loves monster movies, so we were definitely playing in his sandbox,” he laughs. “He came at the project with a genuine passion for the material, which I think was vital to the soul of the movie.”

Del Toro’s enthusiasm was not only contagious to everyone involved in the film, but is also largely the reason he has become an unequivocal favorite among genre fans. In fact, he would be the first to count himself among those collectively known as “fanboys.”

Producer Mary Parent says, “Guillermo has a special connection to that audience because he is that audience, and that makes a huge difference. He is just as excited about creating these amazing worlds as we are to see them. You know, going in, he’s going to deliver a visceral, thrilling rollercoaster.”

Opening across the Philippines in July 11 in IMAX 3D, Digital 3D, 2D and regular theaters, “Pacific Rim” will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
