UP, Ateneo classes to start in August will other school follow suit?

Two of the country’s top schools the University of the Philippines (UP) and Ateneo de Manila University just announced on Thursday a change in the academic calendar, shifting the opening of classes from June to August.

ateneo-up

Classes at UP in Manila, Los Baños, Baguio, Cebu, the Visayas and Mindanao, and UP Open University will start in August and end in May, but UP Diliman, which has “not completed consultations,” and UP Integrated School will still follow the old schedule.

The first semester will run from August to December, the second semester from January to May, and a short term from June to July.

Ateneo will start the new schedule in academic year 2015-2016 in the Loyola Schools and the Professional Schools.

Ateneo Grade School and High School will retain the June to March academic calendar.

Will these changes affect other schools and universities? Are we going to see regular schools and universities opening in August becomes a norm in the Philippines in the near future?

What do you think?

PETA closes theater season with “Rak of Aegis”

The music of the legendary pop-rock band Aegis conquers the local theater scene as the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) closes its 46th Theater Season with “Rak of Aegis”, a Pinoy rock comedy-musical featuring the songs of Aegis. Opening January 31 at The PETA Theater Center, “Rak of Aegis” will run for 6 weeks, Fridays to Sundays until March 9, 2014.

rak of aegis

The highly anticipated new musical will feature chart-topping songs of the 90s Pinoy rock band Aegis, such as “Luha,” “Halik,” “Sundot,” “Christmas Bonus,” and “Basang-basa sa Ulan” performed by a mix of talented theater artists led by Isay Alvarez-Seña, Robert Seña, Aicelle Santos, and Joan Bugcat.

Cast members include Ro Alfonso, Jet Barrun, Kakai Bautista, Poppert Bernadas, Gimbey Dela Cruz, Neomi Gonzales, Pepe Herrera, Carlon Matobato, Julienne Mendoza, John Moran, Jerald Napoles, Gie Onida, Phillip Palmos, Myke Salomon, Paeng Sudayan, and Gold Villar.

A story of love, fame and resilience, the narrative revolves around the residents of the flooded village of Villa Venizia. At the center of the story is Aileen (Aicelle Santos alternating with Joan Bugcat) a young mall promodizer caught in the web of finding love and seeking fame to support her family.

Aileen’s family like the other residents are greatly affected by the flood. Her father Kiel is in the brink of losing his job as baranggay captain Mary Jane (Isay Alvarez-Seña) plans to close her failing shoe factory. Knowing that her income will never be enough to make ends meet, Aileen decides to make a video of herself in the hopes of becoming the next YouTube sensation. Aileen’s suitor Tolits (Jerald Napoles alternating with Pepe Herrera) posts the video online, unaware that it will put Villa Venizia under the spotlight and change their lives forever.

“Rak of Aegis” is a musical filled with visual spectacle showcasing the Pinoy’s natural love for music and innate resilience in the face of calamity. The musical is created by the same women behind PETA’s hit comedy musical “Care Divas,” PETA Artistic Director Maribel Legarda and Palanca Award-winning writer Liza Magtoto, with musical arrangement and musical direction by actor-musician Myke Salomon.

“Rak of Aegis” also consists of a talented artistic team which includes Gio Gahol (choreography), Jonjon Villareal (lighting design), Mio Infante (production design), Carlo Pagunaling (costume design), Maco Custodio (shoe design), and Joan Pamintuan (accessory design).

Repertory Philippines’ “Wait Until Dark” runs Jan. 17 – Feb. 9, 2014!

Repertory Philippines proudly announces the start of its 2014 season with its first challenging production entitled “Wait Until Dark” — a thriller written by Frederick Knott.

Wait Until Dark 09

The play that the New York Post deemed “a first rate shocker,” “Wait Until Dark” is a suspense about a blind housewife named Suzy who finds herself terrorized by three strange men. The men search for a doll that has been filled with heroin and little does Suzy know, her husband has mistakenly transported the doll across the Canadian border and into their apartment. Suzy must rely on her instincts, with the help of a neighbor girl and the cover of darkness to outwit the dangerous strangers and protect her life.

To be directed by theater veteran Miguel Faustmann, “Wait Until Dark”’s masterfully constructed thriller with plenty of intrigue and action promises to move the audiences from one moment of suspense to another as it builds toward an electrifying, breath-stopping final scene.

The cast of  “Wait Until Dark” consists of several colorful and delightful characters. Joel Trinidad shall take on the lead role of Mike Talman. A professional con man, he has recently been out of jail. He is charming and seems sincere but with a dark side — a good liar with a ruthless streak. As his name implies he is tall at least taller than Suzy. Mike Talman is not his real name. It is a name given to him by Roat for the con. Robbie Guevara shall play the role of Sgt. Carlino. A bit of a thug, he thinks he’s a criminal mastermind. Recently out of jail, Carlino is Mike Talman’s partner, but he’s not as likeable as Mike. He is older, and physically out of shape. He is a follower, not a leader. You get the feeling he does not like what he does, but doesn’t know how to do anything else. Roat has given him this name for the purposes of this con. And he should look good in a hat. Jamie Wilson plays the role of Harry Roat Jr., a very creepy sociopathic con man. He is a ‘loose cannon’ that reacts suddenly, violently and without conscience. He is the ringleader of this con. He lived through the beatnik era and never emerged. He’s only interested in himself and will do anything to further his lust for drugs and money. We know that he is capable of murder. We should be afraid of him but also be surprised by him. He plays himself and two other characters in this play. Liesl Batucan plays the lead role of Suzy Hendrix. Recently blinded in a car accident, Suzy is still adjusting to her blindness. Very likeable, she has an air of innocence, but an inner strength as well. She has a good sense of humor but is not silly. With a strong need for independence, she still relies heavily on her husband Sam. Smart, very trusting of others and a perfectionist, she is small in stature, and physically vulnerable. Sam and Suzy have no children. Arnel Carrion plays the role of Sam Hendrix, Suzy’s husband. He is a friendly, outgoing professional photographer and a former Marine. He is very organized, kindly, trustworthy and almost fatherly toward Suzy.  We trust him immensely. He is very good with Gloria, the neighbor and will act as a go between with her and Suzy. Dani Gana plays the role of Gloria, the upstairs neighbor to Suzy and Sam. Sam has been paying her to help Suzy with chores and shopping. She doesn’t have much experience around adults other than Sam and Suzy. Her father doesn’t live in the house with her mother and her and we get the impression her mother is more interested in men than Gloria. A feisty, independent thinker, she doesn’t like to be told what to do and acts out when she is upset. She really wants Sam to like her and is very strong when put in charge.

Co-presented by the City of Makati, “Wait Until Dark” is both exciting and at times, scary with just the right amount of intrigue and excitement for your thrilling experience. The show runs from January 17 to February 9, 2014.

All performances are at Onstage, 2/F, Greenbelt 1, Paseo de Roxas corner Legazpi St., Makati City.
The artistic and creative team of  “Wait Until Dark” is led by Baby Barredo (Artistic Director), Miguel Faustmann (Director), Teresa Barrozo (Sound and Music Design), Miguel Faustmann (Set Designer), and John Batalla (Lighting Designer). The production staff is composed of Gidget Tolentino (Production Manager), Gold Soon (Stage Manager), Pol Roxas (Sound Technician), Pablito Salvador (Lighting Technician) and Adul Lasin (Set Execution and Scenic Artist). The marketing, sales and publicity team is led by David Bianco (Marketing Director), Toots Tolentino (PR Director), Oliver Usison (Marketing Assistant),  Marie Talay (Cashier) and Rose Silva (Sales Supervisor), John Alaras (Design Director), Jojo Mamangun (Photographer), and Lightshapers/ Repertory Philippines (Video Production).

To accommodate all inquiries, Repertory Philippines is now accepting reservations for schools, civic groups and corporate sponsorships. Tickets are available through Ticketworld at 891-9999, or via http://www.ticketworld.com.ph/ “Wait Until Dark” is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

 cacai-bautista-mario-maurer-love-romance

Speculations and rumors spread like wild fire.

In a recent interview with Cacai, she finally revealed that there is no relationship and only friendship is being maintained byt the two of them.

On their unexpected friendship which started out while Maurer was doing a film “Suddenly It’s Magic” here in the Philippines:

“Naiiyak ako kasi sobrang bait niya talaga sa akin. Hindi ko kasi akalain na magiging magkaibigan kami na ganito eh. Kasi ‘yung mga tao… Porket ba komedyante na chaka hindi na pwedeng magkaroon ng kaibigan na sikat na superstar, na international star?”

On true friendship between them:

“Siya lang ‘yung nagpatunay na wala talagang pinipili ‘yung totoong pagkakaibigan, kahit ano ka pa. Marami akong kaibigan, pero ‘di ba, sino ba mag-aakala na ako lang, si Cacai lang [ang magiging kaibigan ni Mario].”

On the rumors that they are in relationship:

“Minsan natatawa ako, minsan nase-stress ako. Wala naman ako pakialam kahit ano pang sabihin — ‘ambisyosa,’ ‘ilusyonada.’ Pero ‘yung sasabihin nila na I’m using Mario to be popular… Kasi hindi naman showbiz ‘yung friendship namin eh. Totoong friendship iyon ‘no.”

On the idea that teir friendship will bloom into something more:

“Siyempre, sumasagi ‘yun sa isip ko. who wouldn’t fall in love for a guy who’s really nice, who has simple dreams? Everybody would fall in love not only with the Mario who is a superstar, but Mario as the person that he is. Parang, wow. Ako rin, may ganoon din. Pero sa ngayon gusto ko maging steady ‘yung friendship namin.”

There you go guys straight from Cacai’s mouth. They are just friends!!
